Stephen Schartz’s ingenuity and aptitude breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into smash-hit Wicked, which comes to San Diego Civic Theatre for the winter playbill.
Wicked smartly weaves political themes, unusual heroes, and improbable love within a number of catchy tracks!
The plot follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity issues, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become fond of each other.
Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices heinous acts against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by persecution. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A disillusioned Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving everything else behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda(Glinda) marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba unwittingly earns Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, and kill her?
Wicked opened its first debut in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new theatres year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its potential to draw audiences also inspired Hollywood to make a movie based on the Broadway show, that released November 2024.
Wicked scored numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including Two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, 3 Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
