Synopsis

This show is set in 1913 at the time when the women’s movement was in full swing in America. Suffs follows the powerful suffragists and their fearless pursuit of the right to vote. Spanning across and against generational, racial, and class boundaries, these amazing, flawed ladies entertain and inspire millions with the story of their hard-won triumph in an ongoing battle against inequality. Although a lot has changed since the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment which was more than a century ago, we’re still reminded that time and again we need to look back if we want to march fearlessly into the future. “Suffs” for short, the Broadway smash hit draws its title from these empowering suffragists who vigorously advocated for female rights when the patriarchy was dead set on keeping them voiceless and powerless.

The Creative Team

The production is helmed by the Taub and Tony-nominated director Leigh Silverman, as well as an all female and non-binary cast of talented actors, including the Tony winner Nikki M. James, Jenn Colella, Emily Skinner, and Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson. Shaina Taub leads the ensemble cast as real-life suffragist Alice Paul. "To all of the theatre kids out there watching—especially the wild little girls—go for it," Shaina Taub said to the audience. "You can do it. You are powerful. You are valuable. You are going to doubt yourself. It's okay. I doubt myself all the time, but you can do it. I'm rooting for you."

Shaina Taub is joined on the stunning San Diego Civic Theatre stage by Tony Award winner Nikki M. James (from The Book of Mormon) as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella (from Come From Away) as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean (from Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812) as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner (from Side Show) as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn.
