Some Like It Hot at San Diego Civic Theatre

Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was everywhere, "Some Like It Hot" draws similarities to another award winning Broadway show, Chicago. Jazz elements fill the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians trying to survive on speakeasy performances. Their lives face an unexpected wrench when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled speakeasy and need to begin cross-dressing to protect their identities from the mob. 

Joe takes on the persona of Josephine, while Jerry transforms into Daphne and the two join an women-only swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a pivotal part of their story as the two men attempt to woo her without revealing their identities. The growth each character faces many tests of their strengths and teaches them valuable lessons about themselves. 

Did you know that "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway reenactment of the 1959 film of the same name, which starred film icons Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The film was based on the 1953 French movie Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most prominent movies in American cinema. The movie earned three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was chosen to be in the first class of 25 movies chosen by the United States National Film Registry to preserve for future generations.

The movies impressive success led it to become the inspriation for the 1972 Broadway show "Sugar", and multiple theatre productions in the 1990s, and eventually, the 2022 Broadway adaptation. Audiences express fanfare over the show and hurry to secure tickets for showings at San Diego Civic Theatre and other theaters. "Some Like It Hot" features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Marc Wittman, the hitmakers behind other hit musicals like "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can." 

The musical includes dazzling dance numbers and catchy songs like "I'm California Bound," "Baby, Let's Get Good," and "Zee Bap." The original Broadway cast earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for their recording of the show's soundtrack.
