There’s a reason why Guiseppe Verdi’s La Traviata is one of the world’s most beloved operas, and part of opera repertoire around the globe. With its instantly recognizable arias, choruses, and smaller ensembles, such as the popular drinking song, ‘Libiamo ne’ lieti calici’ and Violetta’s aria, ‘Addio, del passato bei sogni ridenti’, it’s rich expressiveness, utterly captivating story, wonderful music, and glorious scenery, one can’t have it otherwise than to deeply appreciate, treasure, and love La Traviata.
The opera in three acts, with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, and based upon a play by Alexandre Dumas fils, premiered at the La Fenice opera house in Venice in 1853, and almost instantly became popular. La Traviata is still being performed with massive success around the world to this day, over 170 years later.
The San Diego Opera has put their own delicious twist on the classic tale about a passionate affair, family interference, heartbreaking choices, and ultimately, taking the ultimate risk in the name of love. Under the masterful baton of Yves Abel and Kyle Lang’s imaginative approach to direction, the production is set in the gilded salons of the Roaring Twenties, and is stuffed to the brim with sheer vocal presence and power that will make the heart melt, spectacular costumes, breathtaking visuals, and a superb delivery of Verdi’s timeless music.
