Moulin Rouge – The Musical at San Diego Civic Theatre

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was modified into the iconic live staging in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was given more life by award-winning cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and creative experts including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the scenes.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show filled with the triumph of love against odds that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his dream and inspiration. He hopes to set in motion a successful career as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to pen a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the hidden world of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the performer of the Moulin Rouge that captures his attention. Their budding relationship however meets an almost insurmountable obstacle in the form of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in exchange for a substantial financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the live stage.

Essentially a classical tale that remains a sure favorite in current times, the show is also a combination of both ballads and pop music, putting together songs not just from the original film adaptation, but also song mash-ups and medleys from modern songs that were woven into the plot of the play.
