Moulin Rouge – The Musical at San Diego Civic Theatre

In the first stages of its conception, Moulin Rouge! The Musical had to meet high expectations of exceeding or at minimum being at a matched level with the previous movie of the same name. With overwhelmingly positive reviews, even critics know that the Broadway stage adaptation has ensured that it is here to stay with an impressive turnout each show from both fans and critics alike. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even appreciated the show after reviewing, in quote, “Honestly, as as soon as the show began, I was instantenously plunged into the beauty of what was designed as 19th century Paris. When the production ended, I originally had no words. I was absolutely enamored with what I just watched.” The Broadway hit resumes its productions to date, now in San Diego and to be staged at San Diego Civic Theatre on Saturday 28th June 2025, San Diego Civic Theatre known as one of the city's greatest entertainment venues with a beautiful stage, acoustics, and design both for the interior and exterior of the theatre.

The play's narrative itself is a fresh retelling of the 2001 film focused on Christian and Satine, an American writer moves to Montmartre, Paris to jumpstart his career as a writer and composer, and a performer in the Moulin Rouge entertainment venue, respectively. Christian and Satine begin a secret affair as they get to know each other, and it is in their dalliance that they go back and forth as they try to unsuccessfully stop themselves, though what they feel trumps any hurdle they face.

In the approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes of the entire musical, this tale is told mainly through song, with amazing musical scoring from the creative team, which is a combination of mash-ups, medleys, and even classical numbers. Manchester Media Group was quoted that the play is “an audio and visual masterpiece that translated beautifully on stage.” From the colorful opening number up to the last performance, the musical’s intensity reveals itself; consider the fact that even the cast is composed of singer heavyweights like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo leading the title roles of Christian and Satine and you have another Broadway gem on your hands.
