Moulin Rouge – The Musical at San Diego Civic Theatre

During its brainstorming stage, Moulin Rouge! The Musical had to take on the challenge of exceeding or at minimum being at equal footing with the previous movie of the same name. The musical's current success tells us that Moulin Rouge in Broadway has become one of Broadway's treasures with an impressive turnout each show from both fans and critics alike. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even appreciated the show after reviewing, stating “To be frank, as as I entered the theatre, I was instantenously immersed into the beauty of what was designed as 19th century Paris. When the final act concluded, I originally had no visible reaction. I was left speechless by the spectacle.” The musical resumes its runs to date, now in San Diego and to be produced at San Diego Civic Theatre on Sunday 6th July 2025, San Diego Civic Theatre renowned for being one of the state's leading show venues with a beautiful stage, acoustics, and design both in and out of the theatre.

The play's narrative itself is a rollercoaster with extreme emotion about Christian and Satine, an American writer arrives in Montmartre, Paris to look for something to inspire him, and a star performer in the Moulin Rouge nightclub, respectively. The two lovers begin a secret affair as they get closer to each other, and it is in their affair that they go back and forth as they try to unsuccessfully stop themselves, though what they feel trumps any hurdle they face.

In the duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes of the full show, this show is presented mainly through song and dance, with magnificent arrangements from the creative team, which is a mixture of mash-ups, medleys, and even classical numbers. Manchester Media Group reported that the play is “an experience for the senses as soon as you arrive.” From choreography to the jawdropping musical accompaniments, the musical’s brilliance reveals itself; add to that the fact that even the actors and actresses are composed of singer superstars such as Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo performing the roles of Christian and Satine and you have a worldwide phenomenon on your hands.
